Plaintiff Richard Betty of Drumhalry, county Leitrim, gent., administrator of the goods of Edward Betty, father to PLT deceased, “who in his lifetime and at ye time of his death was debtor “?” to ye late King William ye third and Queen Mary ye second,” sheweth. That Martin Armstrong of Lawehill, county Leitrim, by lease dated 26 Oct. 1682 in consideration of 17 pounds 10 fine devised to said Edward Betty that half carton of land called Drumhalry with the appurtenances situate in the barony of Carrick Allen, county Leitrim, from 1 May 1678, for 51 years at 5 pounds rent, and the duty of 6 men and horses to draw hay and turf yearly upon demand or 1/2d. for each man and horse in lieu thereof (kings rent only excepted) and a covenant on the part of Edward Betty that he should upon summons of Martin Armstrong send an able man and horse with arms on all lawfull occasions to wait as said Martin Armstrong on occaision should require, and also Edward Betty to plant a plot of ground with fruit trees. That by virtue of said lease Edward Betty entered into possession and paid his rent and performed the duties required of him. That Edward Betty died intestate in March 1688/9 and sometime after the battle of the Boyne viz: about the year 1692 or 1693 PLT. obtained letters of administration of the goods of Edward Betty in the diocese of Kilmore and Ardagh, by virtue where of PLT. entered into possession of said premises and paid his rent and performed the duties mentioned to Jennett Armstrong the widow of said Martin Armstrong, and to Robert Armstrong his brother who claimed to be Executor or administrator to Martin Armstrong, till the 9th of April (1703). That PLT owed no rent or arrear of rent. That on 9 April 1703 Edward Johnstons, gent., and Margaret his wife pretended a title to the said lands though they had no title, and PLT went to Edward Johnston’s house at Lawehill, county Leitrim, where PLT met said Edward Johnston, and Robert Armstrong and one Thomas Anderson, when a discourse arose relating to the lease of the premises and Edward Johnston alleged he had an interest in the premises, but PLT was a stranger thereunto that Edward Johnston demanded from PLT. what would PLT. take for his interest in the said lease? To which PLT answered he had no mind to part therewith, but of he had a mind he would not take less
